The Busiest Short Week Ever!

We had a very busy week of learning! We finished learning about explorers, we started learning about insects, trees and plants.

Here are some of our adventures:
We visited the pumpkin vines in our gardens and had our pictures taken.
After our pictures we picked peas, lettuce, spinach and radishes.

We found lots of ladybugs. This was because Mrs. Allen had a LOT of lady bugs that visited our classroom for a whole day!

When we came back in we helped make a salad. Mrs. Patchett, the garden lady, brought us a banana peppers and a few little carrots.
 Some of the peas:
We got to wash the lettuce and tear it into pieces. Mrs. Patchett also brought us some different colored green beans.

We were happy Mrs. Goshert brought ranch dressing.
Most of us tried the salad and loved it!

You can see our 5 Little Pumpkin gates on our tables. we are using them for counting, adding subtracting and learning ways to make 5. We had a great time creating them and using them.

On Wednesday we had a guest speaker, Avery O from Mrs. Allen's class had her dad come in to talk to us about trees. He works with trees and other desert plants. He shared lots of information to share with us.

We got to do some special math games this week.
Placing objects on pumpkins with numbers on them.

Rolling a die and putting that many decorations on a spooky tree. Also reading cvc words on a ring.

Counting erasers and matching them up with numbered pumpkins.

Rolling a die, putting spooky fingers on to match the number we rolled and telling how many more we need to make 10.

Rolling a die and putting that many spiders into a web.

We returned to the garden to plant carrots. They will be ready after winter break!

Thursday brought Disney Day and some much awaited fun!
We rolled dice and followed directions to make pictures
with our 5th grade buddies.

When we came inside and said good bye to our buddies our room was ready for a party!
We were SO excited!!

We decorated mini pumpkins with Kadence's mom.

We decorated frames with our pictures that we took in the pumpkin patch with Allie's mom.

Mrs. Hornbeak helped us with pumpkin scientific investigations.

We played bingo with Davis' mom.

We decorated cookies and then played with our special games with Luke's mom.

We almost ran out of time for everyone to do everything - but we did it!
When we were finished we enjoyed our cookies as well as
a juice box, veggies and fruit.

Everyone was happy and we had a great time.
Thanks so much to the parents who could help and for all of the supplies that were sent in.
Thanks also for coming to conferences,
I enjoy the time with my student's families so much -
almost as much as I enjoy the students!

More October learning!

We started off our study of explorers by learning about Columbus and his theory that the world was round.
We learned about the king and queen of Spain. We looked at some of the treasures Mrs. Goshert brought back from her trip to Spain last year.
We smelled spices like the ones Columbus was looking for in Asia.

We made hats and spyglasses and went exploring on the playground.

We found treasure!

We enjoyed this picture of Mrs. Goshert's son standing on the spot they used to think was the edge of the world!

We made our own earths. We painted them then labeled them with other things that are spheres like the earth. They're finshed and hanging in our room!

We got to go harvest radishes in the garden!
First we stopped to take a look at how our spinach and lettuce is growing.
Then we climbed up into the 3rd grade gardens and picked a radish.

This week we also floated our boats! First we predicted whether they would sink or float. Then we went outside and sailed them.

If we did not have a boat we got to choose one of our fall items to see what it would do.

We headed out to set sail -
they LOVED to see their boats float!

All of our ships floated!

The next thing we did was to predict how many cups of water were in our tub. We wrote down the predictions, then emptied the tub cup by cup onto our straw bale. Every time we emptied a cup we made a tally mark.
We didn't get too wet and we worked hard!

After we were done we counted the tally marks. We made a ten circle for every ten marks. When we were done we had 16 groups of ten, or 160 tally marks, with 7 leftover ones. That meant there were 167 cups of water in our tub. The students who predicted 100 were closest.
Whew, that was a lot of work!
